This I Think

Thoughts on Writing: Writing That Moves You

“Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous. Love is never boastful or conceited. It is never rude or selfish. It dose not take offense and is not resentful. Love take no pleasure in others people's sins, but delights in the truth. It is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes.” – Nicholas Sparks

The feeling of love is something that can’t be embodied in a sentence. It cannot be defined in a dictionary with one clear meaning. It’s a feeling in your heart that has the possibility of changing your entire life. In another extraordinary quote from Nicholas Sparks, “Love is like the wind, you can’t see it but you can feel it.” Every love is different. But, all love can be the same if you do it in the way Sparks describes.
My life has been very fulfilling and beautiful and I am very blessed with the family I have. I have been surrounded with love my entire life from my brother and my parents. But, at a young age, my parents divorced. I will never resent them for this decision, for they are still best friends today. It wasn’t messy and it didn’t damage the family in any way. The one thing their divorce did do was affected my character and morals in a positive way. I view love entirely different than most people my age do. From this experience, my definition of love aligns with Sparks. Love is forever. I know my parents didn’t set out to get divorced 13 years down the road, but I do not believe they did everything they could to preserve it. This showed me to be patient and nurture your love. It also showed me to never settle until the love you want. Love is about embracing their flaws instead of pointing out their faults. It is about putting in the work and appreciating the outcome. It is giving, receiving and accepting. Love is all the things I believe, Sparks believes and then some.
Nicholas Sparks is one of my favorite authors. He is always capturing his audience in the most amazing way possible. Any time I read one of his novels, I can’t put it down. I find myself reading through the nights, caught up in the characters and how relatable they are to real lives. Even though the words he writes are a beauty in itself, the construction of the words is just as important as the meaning. Love is a noun or a verb. It is not something that can be patient, kind or delight in the truth. In this way, Sparks is giving love the personifications of a person that can feel the way humans do. Yes, love is between two people who feel these kinds of emotions, but not the word itself. I think that makes this quote so strong because it gives raw meaning to the thought of love. Another technique Sparks uses is anaphora, the repetition of a word at the beginning of the sentence. It keeps coming back to love. Using the same word again, I believe, adds more to the readers thought because it is always reemphasizing the meaning of love. Lastly, the words are also organized in a precise way that makes the language beautiful. When I read these words on the page, I feel chills from the euphony Sparks uses in his writing. The words together form a beautiful phrase that is remembered by millions of his readers. If there was one person on earth who could attempt to describe love in the best way, it will always be Nicholas Sparks.
